October is National Crime Prevention Month. While crime prevention is always a top priority, a designated month is a way to bring greater awareness in local communities. At Tary Insurance, we are focused on keeping our citizens safe and helping our community grow.
In 1984, October was designated as Crime Prevention Month through a Presidential proclamation. Since then, National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) has been working with local law enforcement, government agencies, civic groups, schools, businesses, and other organizations to help them spread the word about crime prevention and personal safety. With shrinking law enforcement budgets across the country, the role that each of us can play in preventing crime is more important than ever.
In 1979, the NCPC in conjunction with Dancer Fitzgerald Sample advertising (which was acquired by Saatchi & Saatchi in the 1980s), looked to educate Americans on ways to reduce crime. Advertising Executive, Jack Keil, created and gave voice to McGruff, the cartoon hound who exhorts Americans to “take a bite out of crime.” Now trademarked, this slogan has worked to help educate millions of Americans and reduce crime.
Every October, National Crime Prevention Month takes center stage with each week being designated to a different theme. For 2021, these include:
Week 1, September 27: Crime Prevention Month Kick-off!
Week 2, October 3: Home Safety Week
Week 3, October 10: Anti-Counterfeiting Week
Week 4, October 18: Public Health and Safety Week
Week 5, October 25: Community and Law Enforcement Relations Week
